What is GEO?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization.
It’s the strategic process of optimizing your digital content so it’s accurately understood, represented, and cited by generative AI systems like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity — not just traditional search engines like Google.
While GEO sounds similar to SEO (Search Engine Optimization), it addresses a fundamentally different shift in how people search for information and choose service providers.
The Aha Moment That Made GEO Real
Over the last few months, I noticed a massive shift in search behavior. People are moving from what I call a “Google brain” to a “ChatGPT brain” — and quietly integrating AI into how they research, evaluate, and make decisions.
The moment it truly clicked came during a client call.
They were excited about a new inquiry and casually mentioned how the client found them. The answer wasn’t Google. It wasn’t social media.
It was ChatGPT.
That raised the real question:
How do we make sure businesses are accurately represented — and recommended — by large language models?
That question is the foundation of GEO.
How GEO Is Different From Traditional SEO
With traditional SEO, the goal has always been:
“How do I get to page one?”
Search results can span thousands of pages. Even if you’re not first, you still have visibility.
GEO works differently.
With generative AI, you’re either in the answer — or you don’t exist.
There is no page two.
Content Is Used Completely Differently
With SEO, users receive a list of links and choose one source.
With GEO, AI platforms synthesize information from multiple sources at once, combining them into a single response. Your content becomes part of the answer — but only if it’s trusted, structured, and clear enough to be cited.
People Search Conversationally
People don’t type “dentist near me” into ChatGPT.
They ask:
“I’m looking for a dentist in Denver who specializes in anxiety-free procedures and takes PPO insurance. Who would you recommend?”
Your content must answer these full, contextual questions naturally — not just target keywords.
Tracking Performance Looks Different
Traditional SEO focuses on keyword rankings.
GEO performance is tracked through:
- Website clicks from AI platforms
- Citations and referrals
- Visibility inside AI-generated responses
This traffic appears in Google Analytics when AI platforms reference your site.
